On Monday, July 22nd, I will be walking 66 km from Clermont Coal Mine to Capella, Queensland. The route will take me from the mine, through Clermont town centre, around Hoods Lagoon, and then out to Capella.
Each kilometre of this walk represents one of the 66 men diagnosed with prostate cancer every day in Australia. This walk aims to raise awareness and support for those affected by the disease.

Evening Before Walk
Sunday 21st Jul
It’s Sunday, July 21st, 5:15pm, the evening before my 66km walk from Clermont Coal to Capella for Mandate. My alarm is set for 4am, and I’ve just checked my gear again for what seems like the 1000th time:
- Water
- Electrolytes
- Trail mix
- Fruit
- Pasta (for a midway snack)
- Some bags of jelly snakes
- Sunblock
- Spare socks
- Plasters
- A power bank and cable
- Earphones
- A headtorch and hi-vis vest for the predawn part of the walk
Seems like everything is in check. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t both nervous and excited for tomorrow. Despite the long journey, I’m telling myself it’s just me going for a walk, a very long walk. The solo parts of the walk will no doubt give me time to think and catch up on some episodes of Joe Rogan. I might even listen to an episode of him with David Goggins (if you know, you know).
Part of me is anxious too, just worrying in case anything goes wrong. I’m confident it won’t, but nonetheless, the thought lingers. I’m calm too, knowing that even though I’m walking solo for the majority of the walk, at parts I’ll be joined by my friends from work at the pub and my rugby teammates from the Bush Pigs, and can take comfort in the fact that, God forbid there is an issue, help is never far away.
I’m also grateful to anyone who has donated and supported the cause so far. I’m delighted to say that so far, we’ve managed to raise over $2400 in donations.
