Members of Jeff Smith's family with Kathy Stephen from the Founbdation and staff from the PA Hospital's renal ward with the new recliner chair donated by the family to the ward.

During her visits to her late brother Jeff Smith in the hospital, Sharol Rudd and her family noticed a lack of seating options for relatives who spent long hours supporting their loved ones. While the staff were incredibly accommodating and caring, Sharol recalled, “I remember how the staff had to run around in search of a chair for us as we waited with Jeff.”

In honour of her brother’s memory and in appreciation of the care he received, Sharol and her family decided to make a lasting contribution to the Renal Ward. They commissioned a custom-made recliner armchair to provide comfort to other families in similar situations.

“We appreciate the amazing care Jeff received and the gentleness the staff showed to Joy, his wife, and to us. Even the cleaning crew demonstrated unparalleled care and support,” Sharol said, expressing her gratitude.

Sharol hopes the recliner will offer some comfort to families facing the difficult task of supporting a loved one through illness.

“Beyond leaving a legacy in my brother’s honour, we hope this recliner will provide just a little comfort to others who find themselves in the situation we were in. Losing a loved one is never easy,” she added.

Christine Bond, the nurse manager who received the donation, expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the hospital staff.

“The care and support we give to patients and their families is always our top priority. Gestures like these truly warm our hearts,” she said.

“We understand how difficult it can be for family members to spend long hours here, and we hope this recliner will provide a place of rest and comfort for those visiting their loved ones.”

Damian Topp, CEO of the PA Research Foundation, also expressed his appreciation for the generosity shown by Sharol and her family.

“We are deeply moved by Sharol and her family’s incredible gesture. It has been a privilege for the foundation to facilitate this meaningful donation,” he remarked.

“The custom recliner will not only honour Jeff’s memory but also offer a lasting source of comfort to families facing similar challenges.”

The PA Research Foundation plays a critical role in facilitating these kinds of impactful donations that help to improve patient care and support. Donations like Sharol’s enable the foundation to continue enhancing hospital facilities, providing essential resources, and ensuring that families can focus on what truly matters—being there for their loved ones during difficult times.
