Duck Race 2018 – a quacking day raising funds for Cancer Research
It was great weather for ducks on Sunday 14 October for the PA Research Foundation's Annual flagship event, Australia's Biggest Duck Race for Cancer Research. The event was a sell-out, with an incredible 40,000 ducks in the race sold; raising over $220,000 for cancer research.
The day was a hive of activity and excitement, kicking off from 11am with kids' activities galore, including a jumping castle, climbing wall, craft activities, face painting, mini duck race and the crowd-pleasing Totally Wild and Toasted TV Live Shows. Families excitedly watched on as the crew handled live animals on stage, sharing fascinating facts about their cast of curious critters.
Taste-buds were tantalized by an abundance of good food thanks to the Regatta Gourmet Street Bites, including wood-fired pizzas, an American BBQ Smoke House, an Argentinian Grill, pulled pork burgers and so much more!
Throughout the day, crowds were wowed by The Shannon Watkins Band on the Pradella River Stage with his signature folk-rock, acoustic tones, adding an injection of energy and ambience to the festivities.
The Giant Duck Row Race lived up to its reputation, tossing Ranger Stacey and Mark Humphries from Pointless out of their giant, inflatable duck and into the Brisbane River as they raced to the finish line against Mike and his team mate from 97.3 who were indisputably victorious against their river-soaked competitors.
The main event, which saw 40,000 rubber ducks released into the Brisbane River, drew thousands of eager spectators to watch on as the first beaks crossed the finish line. The current in the River was strong, resulting in a swift race, which saw a duck purchased by Keegan Bright from Toowong ultimately claim victory, landing him an incredible first prize of $25,000 cash.
Spirits were high despite the wet weather, with masses flocking to support the cause. Funds raised from Australia's Biggest Duck Race for Cancer Research will enable The PA Research Foundation to continue their efforts in supporting lifesaving cancer research across several research areas. BIG thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, event partners and all who came along to enjoy!
