Dr Blerida Banushi

Where are you from? Where did you grow up?

I am from Albania and I grew up in Italy. I moved to the UK for my PhD and then to Brisbane.

Do you work in a clinical or research setting? And what made you want to get into the work you do?

I work in the research setting.

During the end of my PhD I started to see research not only as an instrument for discovery but also as a powerful tool to make a positive impact in the life of others. That's when I started to increase my interest in applied research and started applying the skills I gained in cell biology to improving the therapeutic options of patients with cancer.

Outside of work what do you like to do? Any hobbies, sports or special interests you're involved in?

I have been addicted to sports since childhood. In Brisbane I have been practicing CrossFit, boxing and more recently Muay Thai. I love nature and outdoor adventures, and I'm obsessed with stargazing. I also like to volunteer my free time in helping others and being involved in charity projects. Last year I climbed Mt.Kilimanjaro to raise funds for UNICEF.

If you had to recommend one book to read what would it be?

'Unstoppable' by Bill Nye

Who is your favourite musician/or band?

I don't think I have one.

If you could invite three people to a dinner party, anyone in the world, who would they be and why?

Given the ongoing travelling restrictions, I would say 3 members of my family.
